The Herald-Journal is reporting that Wednesday’s scheduled game between BYU and Utah State has been postponed, following the sudden collapse of the Aggies’ Danny Berger during practice on Tuesday.

Berger, a junior forward, stopped breathing on the court during a practice session in Logan. He was subsequently revived and taken to the hospital. He has since been transferred via helicopter to Intermountain Medical Center in Murray. It remains unclear what exactly caused the collapse, but Berger is currently in “stable but critical” condition, according to a Utah State press release.

While the decision to postpone the game is somewhat surprising, I certainly won’t question it. It would feel crass to ask the Aggies to suit up for a big game only 24 hours after watching their teammate nearly lose his life on the basketball court before their very eyes. Credit is due to the athletic departments of schools for working together to respond appropriately to such a sensitive situation.

As of this writing, a make-up date for the game has not been announced, although it appears that Wednesday, December 12th, would provide the most natural fit. Neither team is currently scheduled to play a weekday game next week, due to final exams, so Wednesday would seem to be an optimal fit. Though coaches are usually loathe to schedule a game of any significance in the midst of their players’ finals, this may be a time when an exception is made.

We will update this post as more details are made available.

UPDATE: Both schools have officially announced that the game has been postponed. The announcement press releases indicates that it will be rescheduled for a future date, but no arrangements have been made at this time.

UPDATE #2: The game has been resecheduled for February 19th. Details here.
