Brandon Davies, Class Act

At this point, I feel like there’s not much left to say about Brandon Davies and his very public mistake. The national media firestorm over his suspension last year was so big and so unrelenting that, by now, anyone with an opinion on the man or the matter has already offered it. (The actual worth of many of those opinions is another thing entirely.)

Everything has been said, so I won’t add my voice to the chorus except to say this: Brandon Davies is a class act.

Yesterday after practice, Davies addressed the media for the first time since the second San Diego State game last year. He had yet to directly answer a single question about his actions and the ensuing suspension, so his long-awaited return to the spotlight was a potentially difficult situation for a young man who is still just 20 years old.

Well, as the video embedded below shows, Davies handled everything like a seasoned pro. He said all the right things. He was gracious and humble. He accepted responsibility. He showed no resentment. He credited the university for treating him “more than fair” and talked at length about his great personal growth. It was a master class in redemption that would have made Tim Tebow blush.

Does my inner cynic suspect that Davies is saying all the right things because he is under significant pressure to do so from his coach and the BYU administration? Of course. But I’d rather choose to believe that the polished, grateful, mature young man who held court at the Marriott Center on Tuesday is genuine and sincere.

We have to take him at his word – and if we don’t, it says a lot more about us than it does about him.
